Animals at Thota Lodge
If you walk quietly you may come across a Springbok grazing in the pans, or even see the elusive jackal. Another animal to be on the lookout for is the porcupine. They are however shy and you may see only their huge burrows in the sand. Tortoises are usually near the water during the hot summer months. The suricates (meercats) have a very interesting social structure and do not mind being watched. Bird life is abundant and diverse and you may notice the Yellow billed hornbill near the lodge begging for scraps of food. We do encourage our visitors to feed them.
The area is also renowned for its Raptor Route. The nests of the sociable weaver are remarkable and can weigh up to 1000kg (2200lb). It provides a comfortable home for up to 300 paired birds.
The following birds have been recorded at Thota Lodge, and is listed here according to their Robert's numbers: 764, 659, 567, 426, 845, 834, 445, 541, 497, 203, 239b, 255, 356, 580, 454, 779, 861, 869, 563, 589, 457, 459, 595, 615, 685, 799, 800, 500, 344, 186, 806, 465, 803, 182, 739, 878, 870, 451, 814, 625, 847, 447, 194, 884, 804, 354, 856.
